‘The African Cup of Nations is one of those rare, joyous windows into Africa with the potential to show another side of a dynamic continent. Perhaps that is because many of its players are now global personalities. Perhaps it is because we have more access than ever to the people who have been covering African soccer for years. Regardless of the reason, that window into the soul of the continent is a significant part of the reason why I love the tournament. It’s refreshing to see African joy and celebration projected in a space that is usually reserved for despair.’
