We’re still waiting for Italy to produce completely convincing display – for all their dominance here, their finishing was dreadful. They’ve only scored one goal from open play in the competition, and have only beaten one side, Ireland, who had already been eliminated. Their possession play is impressive and Pirlo has been one of the competition’s star players, but they’ll surely need to be more ruthless in the final third to win the competition.

Remembering a day when the Azzurri were not as lucky in their penalty kicks. They lost this semi-final match to Argentina (who eventually lost to West Germany). Italy’s opponent in the third place match, England, had also lost their semi-final match on penalties to the Germans. Italy beat England in that match as well, but they managed to do it without extra time/penalties.

Also-Maldini is 21 here, but he looks EXACTLY the same as when he retired.

You can always tell when an organisation is in denial. They set up a lot of committees to look into the symptoms rather than the causes of their problems. From the look of the FA’s response to the DCMS Football Governance Enquiry of last year, it is quite clear that Freud would have a field day if he had them on his couch. Somehow or other, the urgency for root and branch reform has drifted past the moguls of the game. The FA response shifts responsibilities around but essentially does nothing for the key ills of the game – financial instability and fan disaffection. The game is sinking into laissez-faire chaos of evolutionary proportions and the FA chooses to swerve a golden opportunity to restore sporting values and ethics to the game.

Anyone who has ever played a sport understands that it’s about more than kicking a ball around. It’s the lowest common denominator of the human story – you push yourself physically, you rely on the teamwork of others and your work pays off or it doesn’t. By playing you are attaching something to your gut for the rest of your life. Your life might get real dark but if your team does well, all is still right in the world.

People think about sports as an excuse for bros to get together and be douchebags. Except it’s probably the healthiest way to vent your pent-up emotions. Girls watch “the Notebook” because it’s an emotional story and it’s cathartic to cry about something that’s not happening to you. In the same way, it feels awesome to feel like you are a part of your favorite team and feel happy and excited when they out perform. There have been times in my sports watching career when I cannot account for minutes at a time: the last Twins game in the dome when we beat the Tigers, everything about Favre’s season with the Vikings and Landon Donovan’s stop time goal in the last World Cup. I’ve hugged strangers, lost my voice and probably neared a fight or two.

This is why when Peyton Manning cries, you cry along with him.

Peyton Manning is an institution in American Football. Hell, Petyon Manning is an institution in America. He played for the Colts for 13 years. He comes from a football family, his dad and brother were/are gainfully employed QBs. He was a first round draft pick, earned four MVP awards, 11 Pro Bowl nods, won the AFC South crown seven times and led the his team to a Super Bowl XLI victory. Because of injuries sustained in maintaining this impeccable run, he underwent intensive surgery on his neck and missed the 2011 season. The Colts released him. He cried when he made the announcement.

Honestly, fuck you Colts. Fuck you. Your star player gives you 13 great years and has an injury and this is how you treat him? This is the “What the fuck is wrong with you?” heard around the world. We all hate you now and hope you’re going to get immediately Curse of the Bambino-ed. This isn’t just a loss for Manning or for Colts fans. Anyone who follows football knows about the love of the game and what it costs to be the kind of QB he was. Sports fans are used to some kind of justice, but no one referees what happens back on dry land. Manning worked hard and delivered results but the ax came down on him anyways.

Now we all can speculate what’s next for Peyton. Maybe he’ll take his talents to South Beach. He’s still well a well respected and sought after QB, he’ll find a new home. This isn’t a sob story in the traditional sense but if you claim to love football – or if you’ve really loved any game – you should relate to Peyton and be a little bummed out on his behalf.
